The Covid-19 pandemic has generated numerous changes to learners, educators and parents. These challenges lead to increased achievement gaps.

The shift into the different modalities in the instructional delivery had brought an adverse effect to some learners in varied ways. Hence, to lessen the impact, teachers should create a positive learning environment in a variety of settings in order to maximize the instructional time.

Being a teacher, I pondered what to do to meet the needs of the learners especially in a kindergarten class.

How does home learning work for kindergarten since they are not in the classroom? It is not easy, as it seems, because of this transition to home-based learning modality, parents and learners need to adjust themselves in order for their children to learn comfortably at home. Parents play a major role in the delivery of knowledge and learnings as stated in the modular modalities.

Kindergarten learners need to settle in before they can learn well. At the onset, they need to have an effective learning environment. Next, parents should establish routines. Parents should be instructed to make a daily schedule and must follow it religiously. Furthermore, consistent communication and engagement of parents and teachers should be established for further clarification, follow-ups and monitoring pupil’s progress.

Parents should be motivated by their child’s progress. How they cope up and how they get along with their child’s learning process is a challenge. Moreover, a video recording and pictures of their activities including storytelling/songs should be shared thru applications such as messenger, creating group chat among parents and the teacher. Home visits to some pupils who need interventions seemed useful to uplift developmental progress of the learners.

Hence, as educators in this pandemic time, wherein new modalities of learning are being imposed, there is a need to be flexible, upgraded technology skills. A positive outlook in every undertaking and above all , a fervent hope  in the Divine Intervention is innate in every educator.
